Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for housing and human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. This internship is located in the Egypt country programme, Cairo duty station. Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Urban Development Programme Manager.

Responsibilities

• Develop branding for Cairo Urban week including logo, presentation template, and other communication materials

• Develop Cairo Neighborhood guides for the following neighborhoods (Zamalek, Heliopolis, 6th October, Downtown, Maadi, Islamic Cairo). This will include the following tasks

• Research attraction points in neighborhoods and write descriptions for each and photograph were necessary.

• Propose number of suggestions for format for neighborhood guides. Guides such be map based and should include descriptions of various attraction points.

• Identify media partners that can contribute to the process and are willing to collaborate on selection of attraction points.

• Identify ideal way for sharing urban guides whether through developing websites or partnering with other organizations.

• Position urban guides as tool for promoting tourism and urban sustainability.

• Develop printable version of urban guides to be given as UN Habitat promotional material.

• Support on Cairo Urban Week Legacy project which will include physical upgrading of some aspect of the city. Legacy intervention may be upgrading bus terminal, enhancing open space, undergoing number of tactical urbanism initiatives. Intern will be required to undergo necessary research, field work for site selection, and recommend possible interventions.

• Support on curating panels, workshops, events, and exhibits for Cairo Urban Week.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the responsible officer. It is important to note that tasks will be fluid as development of scope of Cairo Urban Week is still in motion.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled in a graduate degree programme or have graduated from a Bachelor program from a recognized institution in related fields (Architecture, design, urban planning, graphic design, geography, Political and Social Sciences, or other related field). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
